Paralegal – Insurance Law Compliance

Position Overview:
We are seeking a qualified Paralegal to join our team supporting the Office of Rent Administration and related compliance functions. The Paralegal will evaluate External Appeal applications, investigate complaints against regulated insurance companies, and ensure adherence to Insurance Law Article 49 and the Federal No Surprise Act. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple complex cases in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate External Appeal applications for eligibility under Insurance Law Article 49.
  • Screen requests for External Appeals in accordance with the Federal No Surprise Act, Insurance Law, and established protocols.
  • Request necessary information from appropriate parties and respond to inquiries regarding the appeal process.
  • Investigate complaints against regulated insurance companies, applying mandates in Insurance Law and approved policy provisions.
  • Communicate findings upon completion of investigations.
  • Act as liaison for administrative processes with consumers and representatives of financial entities using written and verbal communication.
  • Maintain accurate and organized electronic case files.
  • Research, process, and resolve consumer and provider complaints.
  • Prepare reports and other documents as required.
  • Assist with special projects and research as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Paralegal Certificate (required).
  • Eligible to work in New York State.

Preferred Skills and Competencies:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and apply legal mandates.
  • Strong project management skills with experience handling multiple time-sensitive cases.
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritization abilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliability and strong attendance record.

Additional Information:
  • DFS will provide training on internal processes and applicable laws.
  • Office is accessible by bus; parking is not provided.
