Shifts: All three shifts, 7 days per week
Holiday & Overtime Policy: Work on holidays and overtime only at employer’s request; holiday pay is straight time, overtime paid at applicable rate.

Position Overview:
The Nursing Aide provides essential hands-on care and support to Veterans residing at the NYS Veterans Home. Working under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), the NA assists with activities of daily living, ensures resident safety, and promotes dignity and comfort in accordance with facility standards and state regulations.

Key Responsibilities: Resident Care
  • Assist residents with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, and toileting.
  • Provide mobility support including transfers, ambulation, and use of assistive devices (walkers, wheelchairs, lifts).
  • Assist with feeding, set up trays, feed residents as needed, and document intake/output.
  • Maintain resident comfort by making beds, changing linens, and keeping rooms clean and safe.
  • Provide perineal care and maintain hygiene standards.
Observation & Reporting
  • Monitor residents’ physical and emotional status; promptly report changes (pain, skin breakdown, behavior changes) to nursing staff.
  • Measure and record vital signs (temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight, height, oxygen saturation) as directed.
  • Track and report food and fluid intake/output.
  • Follow infection control protocols including hand hygiene, PPE use, and isolation procedures.
Communication & Documentation
  • Document all care provided in daily logs or electronic medical records.
  • Communicate resident needs and changes in condition to the nurse promptly.
  • Participate in shift hand-off reports for continuity of care.
Resident Safety
  • Maintain a safe environment: prevent falls, ensure call bells are accessible, and respond promptly to alarms.
  • Apply safety devices (gait belts, alarms) as directed.
  • Follow facility protocols for emergencies (falls, elopements, fire drills).
Support & Advocacy
  • Provide emotional support and reassurance to residents.
  • Encourage independence while assisting with care.
  • Respect and uphold residents’ rights, dignity, and privacy.
  • Assist residents with participation in recreational and social activities.
Teamwork & Collaboration
  • Work under RN or LPN supervision, following directions carefully.
  • Assist nurses with non-invasive clinical tasks as delegated (e.g., collecting urine/stool samples).
  • Support colleagues by answering call bells and assisting beyond personal assignments when needed.
  • May accompany residents to outside appointments.

Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of a state-approved Nursing Aide training program and current certification as a CNA in New York State.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and follow directions.
  • Strong communication and observation skills.
  • Must pass pre-employment health clearance, drug screening, and criminal background check.
