Registered Nurse (School Setting)
Position Title
: Registered Nurse
Location: Johnstown, NY
Pay Rate: $55
Overview: Registered Nurses (RNs) are responsible for maintaining acceptable health standards, managing school health records, and providing emergency treatment for student and employee health issues. This role involves delivering care to students and performing related nursing services, such as health screenings, communicable disease control, and notifying of health defects. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate personnel. Additional related duties as required.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Health Screenings: Assist the School Physician in conducting physical, visual, and auditory screenings for students and employees.
  • Emergency Care: Administer first aid and emergency treatment to students and employees.
  • Health Records: Prepare and maintain health records for school authorities.
  • Immunization Clinics: Assist at school immunization clinics.
  • Emergency Transport: Arrange transportation for sick or injured students or employees to hospitals, homes, or medical offices in emergencies.
  • Safety Inspections: Inspect the school plant, playground, and cafeteria, reporting on general safety and sanitary conditions.
  • Inventory Management: Order, inventory, and oversee the storage of first aid and related health supplies and equipment.
  • Health Consultations: Consult with attendance teachers and staff about health factors related to non-attendance and communicable diseases.
  • Reporting: Prepare required clinical and administrative reports.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Graduation from a school of nursing approved by the State Education Department.
  • Licensure: Licensed and currently registered to practice nursing in New York State.
  • Experience: Relevant nursing experience in a school or similar setting is preferred.

Skills and Abilities:
  • Nursing Knowledge: Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their application to medical practices.
  • Health Knowledge: Working knowledge of material-medical, dietetics, sanitation, and personal hygiene.
  • Technical Skills: Skill in the application of nursing techniques and practices.
  • Instructional Ability: Ability to understand and follow technical, oral, and written instructions.
  • Record-Keeping: Ability to keep records and make reports.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Ability to get along well with students, teachers, parents, and others.
  • Supervisory Skills: Ability to plan and supervise the work of sub-professional and non-technical personnel.
  • Personal Characteristics: Good observation, mental alertness, firmness, initiative, patience, emotional stability, a sympathetic attitude toward the sick, good moral character, and physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
