Job Description

Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) Critical Care NIGHTS
Position Type: Short-Term, Temporary (3 months)
Location: Syracuse, NY
Hours: 12-hour shifts
Salary: $68 per hour

Responsibilties:
  • Provide direct patient care, including assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of individualized care plans.
  • Monitor and manage critically ill neurological patients, including those requiring ventilatory support, intracranial pressure monitoring, and continuous neurological assessments.
  • Administer medications and treatments in accordance with hospital policies and physician orders.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, including physicians, neurosurgeons, therapists, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure comprehensive patient care.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to changes in patient conditions, including neurological deterioration or emergent situations.
  • Educate patients and their families about conditions, treatments, and post-hospital care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in compliance with hospital standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety protocols to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
  • Participate in continuing education and professional development opportunities.
  • Assist in post-operative neurosurgical care, including wound assessment, drainage monitoring, and pain management.
  • Conduct frequent neurological assessments.
  • Manage patients with external ventricular drains (EVDs), lumbar drains, and intracranial pressure monitoring devices, ensuring proper functionality and troubleshooting issues as needed.
  • Administer thrombolytic therapy for ischemic stroke patients in accordance with hospital protocol and national guidelines.
  • Monitor patients receiving continuous EEG monitoring and coordinate with neurology teams regarding seizure activity and intervention.
  • Perform blood glucose monitoring, arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation, and electrolyte management for critically ill patients.
  • Assist with intubation and extubation procedures, including ventilator management in collaboration with respiratory therapists.
  • Prepare and assist in emergency procedures such as bedside tracheostomy, central line insertion, and rapid sequence intubation.
  • Provide emotional support and crisis intervention for patients and their families dealing with neurological conditions.
  • Ensure accurate handoff reports during shift changes using SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) methodology.
  • Engage in quality improvement initiatives, including fall prevention, pressure injury prevention, and infection control measures.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot medical equipment, including infusion pumps, ventilators, and cardiac monitors.

Requirements:
  • Current New York State Registration as a Registered Nurse.
  • Certified in BLS and able to berecertified.
  • Minimum of 1.5 years recent experience (within past 2 years) in an acute care facility of similar size and level as Hospital.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience working in Neuro ICU
  • Must be experienced in hospitals or trauma centers.
  • Experience with EPIC Electronic Medical Records preferred.
  • Must possess excellentinterpersonal and communication skills.
  • Will be required to work every other weekend and some holidays
